http://collider.com/the-endless-explained-interview/‘TheEndless’FilmmakersonTheirTrippyMythology&DecipheringThatEndingThisweek,JustinBensonandAaronMoorhead‘sTheEndlessrollsoutonBlu-rayanddigital,whichmeansthatfolksnationwidearegoingtobeunravellingtheheadtriphorrorsofthefilm’sunnerving,mysteriousLovecraftianmythologyandlookingforsomeanswers.Earlierthismonth,Ipublishedthefirstpartofmyconversationwiththefilmmakingduo,whichspannedfromtheduo’searlyideasforexpandingtheuniversetheybuiltintheirfirstfilm,Resolution,totheexperienceoftakingthefinishedversionTheEndlessaroundtheworld.Andnowthatthemoviehashitmoretheaters,itseemslikeagoodtimetoserveupthespoileryportionoftheinterview,whichdivesintowhattomakeofthefilm’smysteriousmythologyandending.Ifyouneedarefresher,TheEndlessfollowsBensonandMoorheadasJustinandAaron(yes,they’reusingtheirrealnames,butno,they’renoplayingthemselves),apairofbickeringbrothersalwaysatoddswhoreturntotheUFOdeathculttheyescapedaskidsinsearchofanswers.Exceptwhentheygetthere,theydon’tfindaUFOdeathcultatall,butahappyandhealthy,ifadmittedlyweirdandunsettling,communeofpeoplelivinglifeontheirownterms.Theyalsofindsomethingmoresinisterlurkinginthehillsidesoftheremotecamp—anunseen,oppressivepresencethatcommunicatesthroughvoyeuristicphotographsandvideoclips,trappingpeopleintime-loopprisonswhereitmanipulatesandtormentsthemintovarioushorrificfatesforitsownamusement.Afrontiersmantrappedinaloopofmereseconds,amanwhohastokillhimselfeveryfewminutestopreventaworsefate,andthelocalcult,whohaveitrelativelyeasybycomparison—livingoutadecentlylongthree-moonloopthatendswiththeir“ascension,”akabeingshreddedintobloodybits.Yikes.Atleasttheydon’thavetoworryaboutaging.ImageviaWellGoUSAAndofcourse,there’sthereturnofMike(PeterCiella)andChris(VinnyCurran)fromResolution,whoaretrappedinthebitterweek-longloopofforcedsobrietyandfailingfriendshipdetailedinthe2002film.TheunseenevilinTheEndlessisthesamechillingcosmicthreatwemetinResolution,andthefilmssharemorecrossoversthanyou’dprobablyimagineonafirstwatch,soyou’relookingformoreanswersonTheEndless,arewatchofResolutionistheperfectplacetostart.OrfirstwatchifyoucaughtTheEndlessfirst,whichworksjustaswell.However,ifyou’relookingforaneasyplay-by-playexplanationofwhatgoesdowninthefilm,you’renotgoingtogetitfromBensonandMoorhead,whoinsisteverythingyouneedtosolvethepuzzlesoftheirunconventionalcinematicuniversecanbefoundrightthereonscreen.However,theduowasmorethanhappytodiveintotheideationbehindthefilm’smythologyandthemindsetbehindendingitthewaytheydid,socheckouttheinterviewbelowforadiscussionofthedifferentwaystheir“monster”isrevealedthroughthecharactersandsettingsinthefilm,theideasthathelpedinspiretheunseenmenace,andwhytheendingismoreaboutcharacterpayoffthanansweringspecificquestions.Iknowyouguyshavesaidyouhavethiswholemythologytotallydownfromtoptotail.WasthatsomethingthatyouhadalreadyachievedatthetimeofResolutionordidthatcomelater?JUSTINBENSON:It’sdefinitelyexpanded.AARONMOORHEAD:Therulesdidn’tchange.BENSON:ButlikewithResolutiontherewere…Inbothofthesemovies,therehavebeenmassivedocumentsofthingsthatpeopleneversee.Andit’sreallycoolbecausewe’reprettysurepeoplefeelthesethingsinthemovie.Thethingsthatareintothat.ButlikeinthecaseofResolution,forexample.TheunseenantagonistofResolution,whichisthesameunseenantagonistinTheEndless,obviously.ExceptinResolution,thepointofviewofthewholefilmisfromtheunseenantagonist.Therewaslikeamassivedocumentthatwentintoeverythingaboutthat“monster”thatwenttooursounddesignertohelpthemdesignthesoundofthewholefilm.SothatexistedduringResolutionandtherearethingsinthatdocumentthatendedupmoreconspicuousinTheEndlessthanexpandedupon.That’sjustlikeoneexampleofonething.Whenitcomestohownaileddownthemythologyis…Whenthecamerapullsbackonthatcanyonandyouseeallthosebubbles,thetimeprisons,wouldyoubeabletolookatthatshotandsayexactlywhat’shappeningineachoneofthem?ImageviaWellGoUSAMOORHEAD:Icantellyouhowlongthoseloopsare,whentheyreset,andallofthat.Thatexactarea,weknowitprettywell.Andthat’sdesert,sothere’sawholebunchofpooranimals.It’sprobablysomethinglikethat,butIwouldn’tsaythatwehaveanentiremapoftheworldandwho’sinit.Butitwouldn’tbehardtotheorize.Wedefinitelyhaveenough.Soitwouldbeprettyeasytotakeagoodgander.Andthen,thelittlesequencethat—themusictrimmingsforthemontagethatfollowsJustinandAaronwalkingpastthebigtotemandit’sinthesortofmonolithcarvedmonsterlookingthing.BENSON:Therustydragonsculpture.MOORHEAD:Andtherustydragonsculpture.Sothosewouldallbeindividualloopsthathavedevelopedtheirownsub-culturesandhavetheirowninterpretationofwhatthisunseenantagonistis.Dependingonhowtheysawit,thestateofmindthey’rein,andtheirownperso
